This is the most asked question every time I encourage somebody to engage into blogging. What should I blog about?
Choosing your “niche” or “topic” in plain words is a little bit easier said than done.
If you want to blog simply as a pastime, then you have the right to publish about whatever you want. The main thing is to have fun in what you do.
If, on the other hand, you want to earn from your blog and potentially grow it into an online business, you will need to carefully and strategically choose your line of topic.
Let me give you some simple advices on what you should avoid when starting your own “make money online blog“.
1. Aim to promote it as business rather than personal – There are rare cases that bloggers can make money by telling personal stuffs about themselves. But this is also one things that you should avoid if possible. That is, for your blog to revolve on yourself as a person.
Unless you are really a superstar like Justine Beiber or Magan Fox, nobody will really care about what you do, or your hobbies, or your stuffs. Do not gravitate it around your person.
I am not against putting yourself in your blog and sharing your experiences with your audience. That is absolutely fine for me. But if you’re serious in making money out of it, it should have a topic on its own as opposed to a personal blog.
2. Avoid trying to cover to many topics – You might have a lot of passions and interests, but you need to chose one of them for your blog. If you put too much of everything on you blog, you will have a hard time targeting your audience. For you to monetize your blog, you need to attract specific group of readers. That’s how necessary for your blog to be focused on a topic.
If you can’t avoid to put multiple topics in your blog, see to it that they are inter-related and then put them into categories.
3. Do not choose a niche that you’re not comfortable working with – Don’t try to just copy or imitate a blogger who has a successful blog and makes money from it. You should choose a topic where you are passionate to talk about. A topic where you’re a subject matter expert. Something you should be knowledgeable about.
4. Lastly, start with just one blog – Do not overwhelm yourself with the topics you can possibly offer. Start with just one blog and then expand if you feel like you’re already successful with your first one. In this way, you do not burst away your efforts. Aim to be successful one blog at a time.
